Discussion relating to cataloging a library's collection

Cataloging websites; children's literature resource

Are any of the rest of you including entries for websites in your library catalog? I've not added many; started several years ago when I found catalog records for several which I was able to download and use with minimal editing. If you are including these types of entries, I'd be interested in knowing which sites you add--and also whether it's possible to download your MARC records using z39.50.

Recently I've found one site compelling enough to actually create a MARC record for it on my own.
Children's Literature: a Resource for Ministry

Pamela Legg-Mitchell and Rebecca Davis taught a course at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Union-PSCE) during Spring 2009 during which students reviewed children's books and wrote essays and lesson plans for selecting and using children's literature with adults and adolescents as well as children. Legg-Mitchell and Davis comment: "The process of “story-linking” or “story-weaving” lies at the heart of educational ministry for us – the process of helping . . . [people] connect the stories of their own lives and the Story of our faith." I've actually been fortunate enough to see the print-only reviews from a similar class which Legg-Mitchell taught several years ago, and they have proved a wonderful source for selecting additional books for our collection.

This website, created using blogging software, was started in October 2009. New entries are currently being added five days a week. It's a wonderful resource for congregational librarians, teachers, and parents--plus a good source for gift ideas.

The catalog record I created, including a MARC format view option, can be found at

I created a "pseudo-barcode" (WEBSITE_020) since the library automation program we use does not retain a bibliographic record with no item holdings attached. This MARC record may be downloaded using z39.50 and edited as appropriate for your own catalog. Ask if you would like setup instructions for downloading from this library catalog.
